How LUMS GPA and CGPA are calculated
LUMS grades relatively in most courses. Your letter reflects where your performance sits against the rest of the class rather than a fixed percentage threshold, which is why two students with the same raw score in different sections can end up with different letters. This calculator therefore starts from the letter grade you were actually awarded.
The detail that matters most at LUMS is the step size. LUMS uses US-style .70 and .30 steps, so A- is 3.70, B+ is 3.30, B- is 2.70, C+ is 2.30, C- is 1.70 and D+ is 1.30. Most Pakistani universities use .67 and .33 instead. It looks like a rounding difference, but it is not. Across a full degree it moves a CGPA by several hundredths, which is enough to cross a Dean's List or honours line.
A+ and A both carry 4.00. The A+ is recognition on the transcript rather than extra grade points, so it cannot lift a CGPA above 4.00. LUMS stops there, like every other 4.00-scale university.
The Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semestersAn F scores 0.00 grade points but its credit hours stay in the denominator. Results are rounded to two decimal places.
Worked Examples
Example 1: one semester's SGPA
A 16-credit-hour semester using LUMS grade points.
| Course 1, 4 CH, A (4.00) | 4 × 4.00 = 16.00 |
|---|---|
| Course 2, 3 CH, A- (3.70) | 3 × 3.70 = 11.10 |
| Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.30) | 3 × 3.30 = 9.90 |
| Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00) | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Course 5, 3 CH, B- (2.70) | 3 × 2.70 = 8.10 |
| Total grade points | 16.00 + 11.10 + 9.90 + 9.00 + 8.10 = 54.10 |
| Total credit hours | 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 16 |
Example 2: .70/.30 against .67/.33 over a degree
A student averaging A- across a 120-credit-hour degree, scored on the LUMS table versus the common HEC table.
| LUMS A- is 3.70 | 120 × 3.70 = 444.00 |
|---|---|
| HEC-style A- is 3.67 | 120 × 3.67 = 440.40 |
| LUMS CGPA | 444.00 ÷ 120 = 3.70 |
| Wrong-table CGPA | 440.40 ÷ 120 = 3.67 |
Lahore University of Management Sciences Grading Scale
LUMS letter grades and their grade points. There is no marks column, because LUMS grades relatively and the percentage behind each letter shifts with the course and the batch. Note the .70 and .30 steps. This is a US-style scale, not the HEC .67 and .33 one.
| Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.00 |
| A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.70 |
| B+ | 3.30 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.70 |
| C+ | 2.30 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.70 |
| D+ | 1.30 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a LUMS A- worth 3.70 or 3.67?
3.70. LUMS uses US-style steps throughout: A- 3.70, B+ 3.30, B- 2.70, C+ 2.30, C- 1.70 and D+ 1.30. Most Pakistani universities use .67 and .33 instead. This is the most common error in third-party LUMS calculators, and it pushes every CGPA they produce too low.
A+ and A are both 4.00. What's the point of an A+?
It is transcript recognition, not extra grade points. Both contribute 4.00 per credit hour, so an A+ and an A affect your CGPA identically. It signals an exceptional performance to anyone reading the transcript, but the scale caps at 4.00 and nothing can push a CGPA past it.
Why can't I enter marks instead of a letter grade?
Because LUMS grades on a curve in most courses. Your letter depends on how your own section performed, so no fixed percentage maps to a grade. The same 78 can be a B+ in one course and a B in another. Entering the letter from your transcript is the only way to get an accurate CGPA.
Does an F count towards my LUMS CGPA?
Yes, and it is expensive. An F contributes 0.00 grade points while its credit hours remain in the denominator, so it hits the average from both directions. Enter it as a normal row with its real credit hours.
How do I handle a W or a course taken pass/fail?
Leave it out. Withdrawals and non-graded results carry no grade points, and their credit hours are not counted towards the CGPA either, so including them would distort the result. The grade dropdown offers only real letter grades for exactly this reason.
Do all LUMS schools grade the same way?
The scale is university-wide, but how aggressively the curve is applied varies by course and instructor. Quantitative courses in SBASSE and SDSB often have tighter distributions than seminar-style courses, which is why comparing letter grades across schools tells you more than comparing raw scores.
